About Us

Coastal Gardens is a family run nursery/garden center located on the outskirts of the peaceful village of Pugwash, Nova Scotia.

Horticulturists Danielle VanDalen & Philip Sprague own and operate their seasonal business tucked into the cozy woods of Cumberland County at 11580, Hwy 6.

Danielle was born and raised in the remote northern community of Slave Lake, Alberta. Her carefree childhood ignited a curious passion and humble fascination with the living and complex world surrounding her. Working in a nursery inspired her to study for a Bachelor of Science degree in Ornamental Horticulture/Nursery and Field Production at Olds College in Alberta where she met Philip, originally from Nova Scotia. For her fourth year practicum she followed her heart to the East Coast to complete the practicum portion of her degree in N.S.

When a parcel of raw land became available, Danielle and Philip decided to purchase it with the intention of eventually building a nursery and home. They started by establishing a small maple camp on the property. Between tapping and boiling the sap, the daydreaming of a fertile future began.

In 2010 they set down roots and began the process of building a nursery: clearing an acre of land, installing power and building their first greenhouse. Around the same time the cosmos decided they needed a seedling of their own! They were certainly kept on their toes, learning essential skills for a growing family as well as a successful business: patience, follow-through and time management.
